Jane Austen’s beloved novels are universally acknowledged to be some of the greatest works of English literature — but they are also treasure-troves of information about economics. This course will introduce you to some of the most intriguing questions and methods in the field of economics through an in-depth study of Austen’s novels. Readings will include four of Austen’s novels—Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion—along with readings in economic theory and history. Combining hands-on economic analysis with literary analysis, we will explore questions such as:
- how did economic conditions motivate Austen to write?
- How did she address calculations of wealth and poverty?
- How did changes in financial markets, inheritance laws, and the economics of marriage affect the lives of the men and women in her novels?
